Growing up in Washington, D.C., I was surrounded by the rich history and culture of Howard University long before I ever set foot on campus as a student. THE Howard University, affectionately known as “The Mecca,” wasn’t just a school—it was an institution deeply woven into the fabric of my city. As a DC native, attending Howard felt like stepping into a legacy that had been calling me for years.
The Howard Hustle: Finding My Place at The Mecca
Stepping onto campus, I immediately felt the energy—the kind of energy that can only be found at an HBCU in the heart of the nation’s capital. From the legendary Yard on a sunny day to the electrifying Homecoming celebrations, Howard had a pulse, a rhythm that was uniquely its own. I quickly learned that being a Howard student wasn’t just about attending classes; it was about embracing a lifestyle of excellence, resilience, and ambition.
The Howard hustle is real. From day one, I was surrounded by some of the most driven, brilliant, and creative minds I had ever encountered. It was both inspiring and humbling to sit in classrooms with future doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and artists—all striving to make an impact. Howard University teaches you that you are walking in the footsteps of greatness, and in turn, you must strive for nothing less.
A True HU Homecoming
One of my most cherished experiences at Howard was Homecoming. If you know, you know—Howard’s Homecoming isn’t just an event, it’s a cultural phenomenon. As a DC native, I had witnessed the magic from the outside, but being a student meant I got to experience it in its full glory. The Yard became a reunion ground where students, alumni, celebrities, and DC locals alike gathered to celebrate Black excellence in its highest form. The fashion, the music, the sense of pride—it was everything I had imagined and more.
The Balance of Being a Local and a Bison
Being from DC gave me a unique perspective at Howard. While many of my classmates were adjusting to city life, I had the privilege of already knowing the ins and outs of DC beyond campus. I could take the bus down Georgia Avenue, grab a half-smoke from Ben’s Chili Bowl, or spend an afternoon at the National Museum of African American History and Culture without hesitation. At the same time, Howard introduced me to a new side of my own city—one filled with traditions, people, and opportunities I hadn’t fully explored before.
The Legacy Lives On
Howard University is more than just a school—it’s a movement, a foundation for Black leaders, and a beacon for those who dare to dream bigger. My time there shaped me in ways I’m still uncovering, giving me the confidence to take up space, create, and contribute to the world in meaningful ways.
Even now, as an alum, Howard continues to be a part of my life. The connections I made, the lessons I learned, and the spirit of The Mecca stay with me in everything I do. Attending Howard as a DC native wasn’t just about getting an education—it was about embracing a legacy that started long before me and will continue long after.
To all the future Bison—be ready, be bold, and be proud. You are stepping into something greater than yourself.
